Developing Trauma Competencies

Trauma Impacts Us All

Our Childhood Trauma Competencies program is a crucial initiative, addressing the staggering reality that 50% of children in our communities face trauma, rising to 100% for those experiencing family separation and foster care. We equip parents and substitute caregivers with tools to understand and address trauma-related behaviors, promoting co-regulation and coping skills for children. With a focus on Hampton, Newport News, and the Historic Triangle, our goal is to empower every identified substitute caregiver, providing essential resources to help children heal and thrive.

Let’s talk stats:

50%

of all children in the world have experienced trauma.

3x

Children who've experienced trauma are 3 times more likely to participate in harmful behaviors

78%

of children in foster care have had

6 or more traumatic childhood experiences
